意念七 speakophone

Concept:
In our daily perception, Amplified speaker and
microphone are so familiarized with their function
we speak in front of the microphone, listen to the
amplifier. Thus, we try to twist this situation
changing the amplifier to a microphone, a
microphone to amplifier, trying to play with the
defamiliarization and conception.

Inspiration:
Until now, we didn’t find any installation
like this. So we think is it quite fun if we see a
installation like this and try to play with it.

Final Project - flanuer in sheung Wan

“The city is the realization of that ancient
dream of humanity, the labyrinth. It is this
reality to which the Flâneur, without knowing
it devotes himself’
------- Benjamin

Intension/Inspiration

I have been living in Hong Kong Sha Tin since 1997.
However, I have never been to Hong Kong Island for
more than 3 times even though Hong Kong is a very
small place. Not to say walking around without any
purpose, whenever I go, I go for purpose. And, in Sha
Tin, you want entertainments, there are entertainments.
You want foods, there are foods. You want clothes,
there are clothes. Name any commodities, Sha Tin gets
it. Therefore, I need not to go to other places. In this
case, I have no chance/no motivation to go these
places. Therefore, I would like to choose a strange
place to Hang around.

Why Sheung Wan?
One day, I went to Western District with my friends
fromSheung Wan by tram (Ding Ding). This is the
first time that I went to Western District. I am so
fascinated by the experience of taking the Ding
Ding(This is my first time taking Ding Ding). I can
recognize this is Hong Kong Island because they
are always represented as a local tradition or
collective memory on TV. Thus, in my impression,
Sheung Wan is place which somehow signifies
Hong Kong traditional culture and development.
I know Hoi Mei Street, Mo Lau Street etc. They can
be googled with a lot of pictures and texts. But I
have never seen that before. Are they all about
Sheung Wan? Is Sheung Wan really only about
Ding Ding and Hoi Mei Street? As an outsider, I
want to know my representation of Sheung Wan.
What do these place mean to me?

Stairs
I was trying to hanging around to know more
about his city, by image, by shops, by observing
the activities of people, by listening to the
conversation. Stair is a good place to see how
they live since stairs are the only roads for them
to move up and down. And many shops are
situated along the two sides of the staris.

Unconscious- identity finding

I realize that somehow I want to have some kind
of confirmation of identity of being a HongKongese
through knowing more about this place which has
a lot of so called collective memory. Through identity
with these “collective memory”(eg. Wee Lee Street),
I hope I can share memory with most of the Hong
Kong people.

Although I have been there for many times, I still think
I am so detached. So I made a little work response/
represent this experience.

A wooden box, with a TV inside, is to recreate
an optical toy. In the very very very beginning
the cinema, people need to go to “cinema”
and insert coin to a machine to watch the “movie”.
The “movie” inside is document some noble/wealthy
people’s lives that they have never experienced.
It is such a gaze towards those lives which so
separated and detached with them.

The words I wrote on the box is my automatic
writing and my feeling in Flanuer in Sheung Wan.
It is a mess. Like what in my mind.

wooden box.
